NHL Futures -
2019 Stanley Cup Winner
Last year’s
National Hockey League season was one for the ages. The Vegas Golden Knights
took the hockey world by storm, reaching the Stanley Cup Finals in their very
first year of existence and Alex Ovechkin finally got his Cup. Prior to the
start of the season, the team from Sin City had odds giving up to 150 times
your bet! Is there value like that to be had this season? Let’s take a look at
the NHL Futures for the 2019 Stanley Cup winner.
The Tampa Bay
Lightning and the Toronto Maple Leafs lead the way atop the odds
list to win the 2019 Stanley Cup at 7/1. This shouldn’t come as any surprise
after the Lightning led the East last season with 54 wins and 113 points and
the Leafs possibly winning the offseason by signing John Tavares.

The Maple Leafs
finished the season with a 49-26-7 record with a brilliant home record of 29-10-2.
With nine more wins in 2017-18 than in 2016-17, it’s not out of the question to
see the at least half of that increase in wins this season, putting them at 54
and winning the President’s Trophy.
The Lightning
squad are built very similar to the Leafs, and return pretty much the same
roster as last year. With another year under their belt with Head Coach Jon
Cooper at the helm and the best young goalie between the pipes in Andrei
Vasilevskiy, it wouldn’t surprise me to see these two Eastern Conference
powerhouses playing in the Conference Finals, but don’t provide a ton of value
at 7/1.
Another team that
dominated at home, with the best home record in the league last season at
32-7-2, the Winnipeg Jets stand alone in 3rd place on the
odds list at 10/1. Much like the Leafs, the Jets are a team on the rise with a
core of young studs like Mark Scheifele, Patrick Laine and Connor Hellebuyck.
After bowing out in the Conference Finals in May to the Knights, a deep postseason
run in 2019 is a good bet for the Jets.
There is a group
of 5 at 12/1 that is very stimulating to me, because I think there is some
solid value to be had with this group. Four of these 5 teams played in the
Stanley Cup Finals the pat two years. Do you know who they are? Take a
moment…the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins were the
last two Stanley Cup winners, with the Vegas Golden Knights and Nashville
Predators the losers. The 5th team? The Boston Bruins,
who finished second in the East behind Tampa Bay last season.
NHL Stanley Cup 2019 – A Way Too Early look
None of these
teams made any huge splashes in free agency, but all return a core that
produced very productive seasons. Repeating is always difficult, and I think
Ovie may still be drunk by the time the season rolls around, and I can’t see
the Knights having a repeat Cinderella season.
You can never
count out a team that has Sidney Crosby and Geno Malkin and the Preds have a
great team with the best fans in the league. There is great value to be had
betting these two, and you never know, when the Stanley Cup Finals roll around next spring, these two could
make watching it very profitable for you.
There is another
group of 5 at 25/1 that could potentially net you a high profit. This group
includes the Edmonton Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers, Columbus
Blue Jackets, Los Angeles Kings and the St. Louis Blues.
Winning $2500 for every $100 bet on any of these guys is intriguing. A $25
dollar wager wins $625, so spending a hundred dollars on four $25 bets on this
group offers a great return.
The Oilers are an
interesting team led by the best young player in the game in Connor McDavid.
This franchise has had a ton of early picks, but just can’t seem to put it all
together. If they had a magical season where most bounces go their way, it
would not surprise me to see them contend for a Cup.
What kind of an
impact will Ilya Kovalchuk have on the Kings after signing a three-year deal
with them? Kovalchuk last played in the NHL in 2013 with the New Jersey Devils,
however, he was just the 2018 Olympic MVP. If his impact is felt through the
entire organization, the LA Kings could make it a lot farther than last year’s
Conference Quarterfinal exit.

I really can’t see
either the Flyers or Blue Jackets winning the Stanley Cup this year, or next
for that matter, but the St. Louis Blues are a team that is very well coached
and plays an all-around game that transitions well into the playoffs. They can
be considered.
Beyond here, there
may be a team or two that surprises, but good luck figuring out who it is. The
Blackhawks were a great team for many years, but even at 33/1, I won’t risk it.
I can’t speak to any team left, but as stated, there is always a team or two
that does the unthinkable.
Before I let you
go I want to talk about one more team that caught my eye when I was looking at
the odds for NHL Futures for the 2019 Stanley Cup winner, the Ottawa Senators.
This team went to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2017, but the events
involving Mike Hoffman’s girlfriend harassing Erik Karlsson’s wife has severely
severed the lockroom.

Even goalie Craig
Anderson has asked to be moved, and he was so grateful to fans for backing him
and his wife’s fight against cancer not long ago. They are currently in the
basement of the odds to win the Stanley Cup at 150/1, with the next two up at
100/1, the Vancouver Canucks and Detroit Red Wings, who for the record I do not
think are two of the three worst teams in the league.
